Vienna, the city of Music! (Eastern Europe Part 1)

Another "impulsive" wanderlust moment got us booked on a CTC tour to Eastern Europe after comparing the itineraries of many travel operators. Enticing the tour was, promising to cover 6 countries in 13 days 10 nights!

Vienna was the first stop and the first thing i noticed about Vienna was that the streets were really empty considering that the city (much larger than S'pore) had only 1.7mil people. Being in the empty streets became a kind of luxury!
The most important sight in Vienna is the  Schonbrunn Palace (the royal palace) where the former Empress Sisi resided.

This was one of the most impressive baroque complexes in Europe. The rooms inside were decorated in Rococo style and most of the walls and ceilings are covered with white-lacquered surfaces with ornaments of gold leaves. Bohemian crystal chandeliers also hung down from the high ceilings.

Unfortunately, pictures inside the palace were not allowed.

Other sights in Vienna,

A modern building which stood out amidst the old...

I just love the bark of this tree!

What i particularly liked about Vienna is that the city had a lot of green within it and green always brings a kind of comfort to me.

Another favourite sight in Vienna is the St Stephen's Cathedral which stood in the heart of the city and the shopping street.

What caught my eye were the noveau art roof tiles in gorgeous colors..
and when i entered the cathedral, it was like being transported into another dimension...

You see why!
The gothic style cathedral had a twist to it, with the display of lights inside.

and what was different about the cathedral were the colourful PLAIN stained glasses...
Less was more in this case..

There was just another important thing to do in Vienna!
That is definitely to try the local cake known as the Sacher-Torte...
The Sacher-Torte is made of chocolate and thinly coated with apricot jam.
And what is the sacher without being paired with a cup of Vienna coffee!

I am not normally a coffee drinker, but the Vienna coffee was a must-try and i must say it was good!
and it left me craving for another cup with a lemon tart..
Most of the cafes around the St Stephen Cathedral serve the Sacher alongside other tasty pastries!

so spoilt for choice!

Vienna is also the birthplace of Gustav Klimt, an Austrian painter whose more famous pieces include "The Kiss", "Judith" and "Beethoven Frienze". There are walking tours to enjoy his works, something I didn't have time for on this trip but definitely will do if I should return to Austria one day!

Austria is also the birth place of Swaroski crystals.
The store was huge, it is 3 levels boasting a large collection of jewellery and display crystals. A store definitely worth visiting, also located along the main shopping street near St Stephen's Cathedral.

The jewelry pieces were also rather affordable. They make really good gifts!
And not forgetting, do try the "Mozart" chocolates ...

TBC... next stop : Slovakia!
